of Presentation: Implementing Sustainable Development Generates
Business Value Authors: Jenni Cawein & Ronald Meissen Key Words: sustainable development, SD, implementing, tools, business value, Baxter Abstract: Sustainable development (SD) isn't just the latest business buzzword. SD became world policy at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. SD concerns employee health and safety, as well as environment and other aspects of business. Governments, businesses and other organizations are developing SD strategies. Events and activities in this area are gaining momentum and moving very quickly. Ignoring SD won't make it go away. Embracing it offers tremendous business opportunities. This session will explore how Baxter, a multinational healthcare corporation, is integrating SD into its business operations. We will provide a focus on the three important SD principles (profitability, social responsibility and environmental responsibility) that drive cost savings, innovation and other value. The workshop will present a case study experience and proven industry tools that EHS personnel can use to integrate sustainable development principles by working with designers, purchasing, engineering, quality and production personnel. Communications skills (gaining "buy-in") are critical to sustainable development efforts. Many times, a problem in communication causes failure in the implementation of a new process or hinders significant improvement. We will discuss some of the techniques and tools we are using at Baxter to promote SD and to change attitudes and increase personal commitment. |
