Plan ahead—With so many things to do in Chicago it is helpful to have access to information to help the planning of your visit.  Two of the best sites are the City of Chicago's Tourism Site--Exploring Chicago and the Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau.  These sites have links to other sites and descriptions of various activities and sites.

Throughout this web page, ACHMM 2001 Conference Hospitality Committee has included some of the current events, activities, and places of interest that can be easily reached from the conference hotel by walking, the free trolley, or public transportation.  The ACHMM 2001 Planned Recreational Activities are highlighted throughout the web page.  There are links to the "Recreational and Special Events" web page which contains further information.

  The Grid-system:
(Figuring distance and location using street addresses.) (self-propelled Tours)
Chicago is built on an easy-to-follow north-south-east-west grid system:
1. Major thoroughfares run on straight east-west & north-south routes.
2. The EW dividing line is State Street. The NS division is Madison Street.
3. Buildings are designated N/S or E/W relative to Madison and State Street, respectively.
4. Each city block covers addresses in increments of approximately 100 and are about 1/8th of a mile.
5. EW streets south of Madison tend to be ID'd by numbers (e.g. 63rd St.) while the north EW often use names (e.g., North Ave.).

Chicago has some of the most reasonably priced world class museums in the country. With a little planning ahead, children and museums can be fun and enjoyable. To keep costs down, take advantage of the museum free days and if, possible, pack a lunch or snack. When traveling with children, take advantage of the special interactive sections designed especially for them. Many museums have a lawn or a park nearby and will stamp visitors’ hands to permit re-admission on the same day. A picnic on the lawn in the shade where children can stretch their legs can help make the day easier. Taking a half-day at a museum followed by an afternoon at the zoo or park. Top
