2. The Free Trolley System provides excellent access to
most of the city's attractions such as The Museum
Campus, Navy Pier, Sear's Tower, Union Station, North
Michigan Shopping District/ Magnificent Mile, and the
Lincoln Park Zoo. They are very popular and
sometimes crowded. Most routes primarily run
during daytime hours (10 a.m. - 6 p.m.) but some may
have extended hours to El stops (e.g., Navy Pier).
Pickups run every 20-30 minutes with possible traffic

The
Grid-system:
(Figuring distance and location using street addresses.)
(self-propelled Tours) |
Chicago is
built on an easy-to-follow north-south-east-west grid
system:
1. Major thoroughfares run on straight east-west &
north-south routes.
2. The EW dividing line is State Street. The NS division
is Madison Street.
3. Buildings are designated N/S or E/W relative to
Madison and State Street, respectively.
4. Each city block covers addresses in increments of
approximately 100 and are about 1/8th of a mile.
5. EW streets south of Madison tend to be ID'd by
numbers (e.g. 63rd St.) while the north EW often use
names (e.g., North Ave.). |

Chicago has
some of the most reasonably priced world class museums
in the country. With a little planning ahead, children
and museums can be fun and enjoyable. To keep costs
down, take advantage of the museum free days and if,
possible, pack a lunch or snack. When traveling with
children, take advantage of the special interactive
sections designed especially for them. Many museums have
a lawn or a park nearby and will stamp visitors’ hands
to permit re-admission on the same day. A picnic on the
lawn in the shade where children can stretch their legs
can help make the day easier. Taking a half-day at a
museum followed by an afternoon at the zoo or park. |

Chicago--Getting Around: Pedways |
Chicago has an underground
system of pedestrian walkways that makes navigating the
Windy City easier in inclement weather. At the far point
under the Illinois Center at Michigan Avenue and the
Michigan Avenue Bridge a network of walkways that lead
to stores in the Loop area and the major train stations
can be found. There is also an entrance elevator in loop
buildings and subway stations. Maps of the Pedway are
